if you're a fellow philadelphian, i'm sure you've heard about the sabina rose o'donnell case. for those who haven't, a 20 year-old girl was brutally murdered and sexually assaulted a couple of weeks ago right outside of the home she lived in with her mother and stepfather. apparently, she had been biking back from a friend's house, and as she was trying to get into her apartment, a man grabbed her and drug her to an open lot nearby her house. a man walking his dog found her the next morning, naked with clothing tied around her neck. as you can imagine, the philadelphia community was completely horrified by this, especially young people (sabina was a waitress at a popular restaurant, and was big into the nightlife scene). this morning, it was announced that her killer had turned himself in after a tip from a neighbor. the boy, 18 years old, said that the attack was random, and he just planned to steal her bike. while many people are killed in philadelphia on a yearly basis, this case hit close to home for several reasons; for one, the girl was on her bike. i bike everywhere, as do many of my girlfriends, and always figured that i'm safe - no matter what neighborhood i'm in. secondly, she was literally right outside of her house when this happened. and thirdly, this didn't happen in a particularly bad neighborhood - more or less on par with mine, and many of my lady-friends.
hopefully her family can gain some peace knowing that her killer was caught. and ladies, let's be safe, please? i know that i'm definitely going to think twice about where i bike through late at night. my friends and i have been checking with each other before we walk or bike home, trying to make sure that everyone has someone to travel with. it makes me very sad that it's gotten to this point, but hopefully it means that we're all a little safer.
ps: if you'd like to help her family pay for funeral expenses, her former employer set up a fund here.
