I paid a visit to Artland to replenish my ink and paper supply. Now, a lot of people will say that real artists in Hong Kong don't buy their materials from Artland, and yes, that is true. Artland caters more to hobbyists and amateurs. Things aren't exactly cheap here, but if you only need to buy a few items, the convenience makes it worthwhile.
If I had the time, I would wander around the shops in Mong Kok, buying this and that from different places, but since I was in Wan Chai anyway...
Now, Artland has a decent variety of stuff, but I wouldn't call their selection comprehensive. They don't really sell any of the very expensive art supplies like Winsor & Newton Kolinsky Sable watercolour brushes, for example. However, Artland is still worth checking out, especially if you normally live somewhere you can't get access to European brands. You can get a list of their products at their Web site here.
The shop is in an office building called Lockhart Centre on 301-307 Lockhart Road. Take this escalator up to the lifts and get off on the third floor.
I ended up buying a Japanese brand of ink rather than a Holbein. I can be rather indecisive, though, so I probably spent a good fifteen minutes staring at the inks here.
One of the good things about Artland is their selection of fabric paints and dyes.
Artland has just opened up a gallery of works by their customers, I believe (didn't bother reading the fine print).
There were some landscapes and portraits, which were very pretty, but my eye was drawn to this manga character. I don't know about anyone else, but I tend to get crushes on cartoon characters. Don't worry, I'm fully aware that Kurosaki Ichigo and I will never be together. Instead, I have to find a guy who looks just like him.
Not too sure about the outfit, but I like the chair! A nod to HR Giger, isn't it?
Swoon! If a guy who looked like that looked at me like that, I would like that.
That is a very tight shirt. With his hand extended out, it makes me feel a bit Take on Me.
It's a good thing you can't see much of my reflection because I was giggling as I photographed this one. The open legs! The undone belt! That smouldering look! Good gracious, someone quickly fetch the brawny arms of a twenty-year-old fireman! I'm getting the vapours!
