for this first round of the pickwick ladies book club, we read a collection of fairy tales by hans christan andersen. i was obsessed with fairy tales as a kid, so this book couldn't have been more perfect. the twelve dancing princesses, though not an andersen story, was my favorite. i chose "mother elderberry", the story of a dryad, or old woman who lived in an elderberry tree. her name is remembrance, and she is the subject of a story told to a little boy when he is sick.

“Here it is beautiful in autumn!” said the little girl, and the atmosphere seemed twice as high and blue, while the wood shone with crimson, green, and gold. The hounds were running off, flocks of wild fowl flew screaming over the barrows, while the bramble bushes twined round the old stones.

dryads were wood nymphs frequently referred to in greek mythology, sometimes taking the form of a young woman. they lived in forests and were generally gentle and musical and dreamy and such, but could be very tempestuous and spiteful.
