today was an incredibly difficult day. my oldest dog, an 11 year old pekingese (that i've had since i was 13) developed intervertebral disc disease. in the morning, louie was walking kind of funny, just lumbering around. he wouldn't go outside and bryan ended up having to carry him. he's crabby in the morning so we figured he was just sleepy and put him on his bed. i left the house for about 2 hours and when i came home, he couldn't walk. louie was just dragging his back legs behind him and trying to pull himself across the floor.

i completely and totally lost it.

i don't think i've ever been so upset in my life. i immediately called bryan and he rushed home from work. we called the vet and brought him in. the x-rays showed that he's missing the cartilage between the bones in his spine, basically causing his discs to rub together. it's extremely painful and can advance to a much worse condition - he could lose all feeling in the back of his body, not being able to walk, go to the bathroom, or even move. we started him on steroids today and are hoping that they work within the next 48 hours. if not, we have to take him to a neurologist and pursue a surgical route before he gets any worse.

anyway, these pictures are from the weekend. when i got home, i was such a mess that i accidentally threw my digital SLR into a bowl of water. it's sitting in a container of rice and i'm hoping to god that it will turn back on. after the vet bills we paid today (don't get me wrong, it was well worth it), i don't think i'd be able to afford another camera body. the rice trick has served me well in the past and i'm going to try turning the camera on tomorrow.

any good vibes and positive thoughts would be much appreciated. louie is passed out on his pillow right now and isn't really able to move. i'm hoping and praying that tomorrow morning, he'll be able to walk normally again.
