Angel Locsin and Lea Salonga Talk about RH Bill

In light of the continued clash over the controversial Reproductive Health (RH) bill, actress Angel Locsin and international singer Lea Salonga have stepped up and voiced out their stand on the issue.

Locsin is known to be an active advocate for the wellness of women. She is a member of the Gabriela party-list, a group representing the "biggest alliance of women's organizations in the Philippines."

In an interview with ABS-CBN News, Locsin emphasized that she is neither pro- nor anti-RH bill. For her, the proposed law still needs to be checked further.

“Ako, pro-life ako, as in pro-life. Ayaw ko i-entertain ang abortion. Pero ang pro-life, ang mabuhay ang tao ng disente...kailangan i-dissect pa ang bill,” Locsin said.

She, however, maintained that she is in favor of the use of contraception but education must come first. Locsin said access to reproductive health information must not be denied to anybody.

She stressed that it is always important to take into consideration the health of women and their children.

“Ako ay para sa planado, mulat at responsableng pagpapamilya. Ako, pro-life talaga ako. Hindi lamang ito para sa family planning, kalusugan ng ina at anak. Hindi mangyayari ito kung walang education, social services,” she said.

Meanwhile, Salonga made it clear that she is in full support of the RH bill.

In a statement, she said that it is every woman’s right to choose what kind of family planning is appropriate for her.

"[I support the RH bill because] I want every Filipino woman empowered with information regarding all options available to her regarding family planning. I want every Filipino to be armed with the right education regarding their bodies in the context of sex and reproduction; to exercise their free will in ensuring the quality of life based on their own personal, religious, and moral convictions and beliefs; and to have a fighting chance at a better life," the Broadway star explained.
