Hong Kong Jockey Club Wedding Banquet

I got invited to a friend's wedding banquet over at the restaurant in the VIP area of the Hong Kong Jockey Club in Happy Valley. I thought people might enjoy seeing a traditional banquet menu and all that.

I don't have any photographs from my own wedding, but, depending on your sense of humour, it was the worst or best wedding ever. My ex-husband and I were kicked out of our own wedding by the officiating dude. Ex-husband wore pajamas and a suit jacket, I wore a backless shirt -- not a halter top, but a shirt that had its entire back ripped out -- a corset skirt and shoes that look like hooves. I still have all those things, by the way.

But we weren't kicked out because of how we looked, it was because of all the things we were doing, tsk on us. It's a story that needs to be told in person, though.

Anyway, I was just thinking that when I marry ex-husband #2, I'd like my wedding march to be "Bulls on Parade" by Rage Against the Machine. I mean, yes, this song makes me want to beat someone up (perfect for a wedding?), but that "waka-waka" guitar sound makes me feel kind of romantic, too. Don't you think so?

Anyway, enough of that, you're not here for my sordid past and future.

Here is the Jockey Club fancy Chinese restaurant.

The televisions were so that we could see what was happening onstage as the emcees spoke and singers performed.

The menu for the 10-course meal.

Oh, the roast suckling pig was delicious. I gobbled up the crispy skin and a piece before remembering to take a picture. Look at all that lovely fat.

I kind of have ghetto tastes because I don't appreciate scallops, abalone or shark's fin. This was alright. Again, I started eating before I remembered to take a picture, so please note that it's not like the portions were tiny, I just ate most of it already.

Scallops and veggies. The veggies were lovely and fresh.

Fried prawn croquette. It was very good.

Shark's fin soup. Eh, pretty typical.

Abalone with vegetable. Eh.

Steamed garoupa. Quite good, actually, but someone beat me to eating the head.

Fish heads and bellies are the best parts of the fish.

I had a lot of wine since no one else was drinking, and I didn't want all the wine to go to waste.

Fried chicken! I was able to score 2 servings of this!

Fried rice. It was really good, but I got distracted and didn't get my wonton dumplings, dammit.

For dessert, we had almond cookies.

Red bean jelly pudding.

Walnut soup with glutinous rice dumplings. Someone complained that the soup wasn't thick or rich enough, but I quite prefer it like that. So, there you go, a typical Chinese banquet.
