i think i may have found a break with a job for the fall. i was contacted by a school several weeks ago; it's on the other end of the city, but at least it's in philadelphia (where i definitely want to teach). after emailing back and forth with the recruiter, she asked if i'd be interested in a phone interview (of course i said yes). i actually thought i did horribly on it; i didn't understand one of the questions that she asked, and fumbled over my words a couple times. at the end of the conversation, she said that she'd be in touch by email and i figured that meant "we're not hiring you, have a nice life." you can imagine how surprised i was when i received another email from her, asking me to come to the school for an in-person interview. my interview was yesterday, and it went surprisingly well - i think i do much better talking face-to-face with a person, as opposed to over the phone. the position is for first or second grade (which is just what i wanted) and the school is opening a brand new building next year. they just contacted me this morning and asked me to come into the school to do a demonstration lesson with their second graders; it's basically the last step in the interviewing process. i'm really hoping that it will work out!

i also spent time with my little yesterday; i'm involved in a mentoring organization called big brothers, big sisters (i'm the "big" and the child i mentor is the "little"). she's such a sweet, smart girl despite living in an environment that constantly tries to pull her down; it's a classic example of the crabs-in-a-bucket mentality. we made dinner together (corn chowder!) and watched fantastic mr. fox. big brothers, big sisters is built on the idea that spending time with your little doesn't have to be a huge event or expensive; something as simple as getting hot chocolate and play UNO is just fine. i can't say enough good things about the organization, and really recommend joining if it's in your area.

are you involved in a community organization? is there one that you're thinking of joining?

ps: i listed tons of vintage shoes in my blog shop last night. shoot me an email if you're interested in anything!
