Some of you may already be familiar with Daydream Nation. No, not the Sonic Youth album, but the fashion label by two Hong Kong kids. I was told that they made quite a splash in the UK, but I only found out about them when they sold stuff at the now-defunct Delay No Mall, where I also sold my jewellery.
About two months ago, they opened a flagship store over in Star Street.
Daydream Nation's stuff is very quirky and with a sense of humour. I quite like their aesthetic, but alas, I'm not the right body type for a lot of their designs. I should mention that the sizes run quite small. Size 6 is soooo tiny, the waistline is probably the size of my leg. However, sizes do go up to a 12, but that's most likely an American 6 or a UK 10 at the most.
Incidentally, I realize that I keep talking about being big a lot in this blog, and I just want to assure you, I don't hate my body (or other people's for that matter). I'm realistic enough to see that I'm not skinny by Hong Kong standards, and there's nothing wrong with being bigger. I know I've called someone pudgy in a previous entry, but in all honesty, we're about the same size, anyway. I probably should quit using words like that pejoratively, though.
Aren't these skirts just DARLING? They've got leather or suede deer legs either attached to them or sewn onto them! I was quite tempted to get that one on the far right, but I told myself that I would only get one item, and I already had my eye on something else. I made a bit of extra money this year from a couple of surprise jewellery sales, and I thought I might as well put a bit of it towards supporting other independent designers and artisans such as Manique and Daydream Nation.
Shirt with eyeglasses necklace. Very cute.
I just adored this skirt, but I looked so weird in it for some reason. I think the pleats sprouted out at the sides too geometrically so that I looked like I was wearing a cardboard cutout. What a shame because it's such a fantastic gold colour.
In the end, I bought this skirt below. Isn't it a riot? I can't trot around like I normally do in it, but I think that can be a good thing. I got it for 50% off as they're currently having their Christmas sale. Otherwise, I'm not sure I could afford too many items from Daydream Nation.
First, here's my complete outfit. I was feeling this 1980s "Hot for Teacher" vibe. Pardon the wrinkly skirt. I washed it as soon as I got home, but I don't have an iron. I actually just steam my clothes over the kettle when I'm boiling water for tea or leave them in the shower for the steam to de-wrinkle. I obviously didn't do either for the skirt, though.
The skirt looks like a regular pencil skirt at first glance, but take a closer look at the hem. That's right! It's a skirt made from an upside-down men's flat-front trousers!
Here it is from the back. Isn't it cute how you can unfasten and zip the fly in order to get a slit?
The skirt also came with a black belt. Here it is belted on.
Front. Erm...I realize that there is a bottle of Finlandia prominently displayed in the back. I just finished breakfast, you see.
Back.
If I have any complaints, it's that the belt is so fucking cheaply-made and of such poor quality that when I slipped it on, part of the leather split, and I had to repair it with leather glue, which is nasty. It's really too bad because the rest of their stuff seems decently made.
If you're interested in picking up some of their stuff, better hurry now while the sales are still going on.
